InForensic

The University of Piraeus, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and as part of the digitisation of justice procedures, is developing a research information system to support the State’s forensic services. Beyond digitising, managing and safeguarding the data of forensic cases, the system advances research in the field with innovative services and applications:

• advanced human–computer interaction techniques for user-friendly data entry, including mobile devices;
• generative AI and large language models that assist the drafting of the forensic report;
• data analytics to quantify findings and mine knowledge;
• a database with mechanisms for retrieving similar cases and extracting statistics;
• interfaces with third-party systems to look up relevant information, such as the electronic health record and the e-prescription system.

Project offerings

The project rests on three pillars: easier forensic examination procedures, digitised activities of the forensic services, and a contribution to digital transformation and faster administration of justice.

System architecture

The system is built around the forensic doctor and the cases. A case starts when the department receives an order and is assigned to a forensic doctor, who examines the incident and prepares the report. For the research functions, data are entered on a tablet during the examination, and computer vision and machine learning models process them further for pattern recognition, generative AI, medical image analysis and forensic data analysis.

Implementation

The project is implemented by the Computational Biomedicine Laboratory of the Department of Digital Systems, University of Piraeus, under the supervision of the Greek Ministry of Justice.

This project is implemented within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
