The Computational Biomedicine Laboratory (CBML) of the Department of Digital Systems at the University of Piraeus achieved an outstanding 3rd place in the prestigious IFMBE Scientific Challenge Competition 2025, competing against leading academic institutions from around the globe.
This year’s challenge focused on the automated segmentation of wounds in digital images, a task of critical importance for medical diagnostics and treatment monitoring. The University of Piraeus team, led by Professor Ilias Maglogiannis, and comprised of Dr. Athanasios Kallipolitis, PhD candidate Melina Tziomaka, and PhD candidate Argyris Zafeiriou, developed an innovative solution that achieved a combined F1 score of 0.8854.
The system demonstrates significant clinical applicability, providing tools for automated wound measurement and monitoring of the healing process, contributing to improved patient care and clinical efficiency.
This distinction reflects the University of Piraeus’s commitment to research excellence and innovation in the rapidly evolving field of computational biomedicine.
